William Irving September 16, 2009
The U.S. 2009 World Championship Team returns from the International Canoe Federation Slalom World Championships in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain home of the 1992 Olympic Games. With 98 competitors in the Men’s Kayak field, 2004 Olympian Brett Heyl faced very stiff competition to finish a respectable 7th place. Brett was paddling extremely confident through the entire competition and his finish proved that he is amongst one of the best paddlers in the World. Kayakers Scott Mann and Jim Wade also had very respectable finishes with a 26th and 30th finish overall. In the Men’s C-1 Benn Fraker had a questionable missed gate call on a very fast second run in the heat that dropped him into 27th overall.
Other U.S. competitors in the men’s C-1 included Casey Eichfeld and Zach Lokken who finished 39th and 46th respectfully out of a very deep field of canoe competitors. The women’s C-1 was competed for the first time at the 2009 World Championships and represented proudly by Carolyn Peterson, Micki Reeves and Hailey Thompson.
