Men’s Kayak and Women’s Canoe Wrap Up at World Cup No. 3

AUGSBURG, Germany – It was a great day to be a German. The city of Augsburg was celebrating the successes of it’s national soccer team’s victory over Argentina in the World Cup semifinals as well as a podium sweep by it’s men’s K-1 athletes. Flags were on every car, house and person.

Micki Reeves (Grand Junction, Colo.) just missed the cutoff for the final round, placing 11th in the semifinals on Day 2 of the third and final World Cup of the season Saturday.

After starting the day also in 11th place, Reeves put down a run of 279.92, with 108 seconds worth of penalties. Carolyn Peterson (Austin, Texas) finished the day in 18th place on her last run of the World Cup season.

The U.S. Men’s K-1 athletes had a tough day as the Germans dominated on their home course, finishing one-two-three in the final round. Brett Heyl (Norwich, Vt.) entered the day in 17th place but fell to 31st in the semifinal round. Scott Parsons (Sylvania, Ohio) and Scott Mann (Bethesda, Md.) finished the day in 33rd and 40th place, respectively.

USA Canoe/Kayak National Teams Director William Irving is hoping for a better result tomorrow from Benn Fraker (Peachtree, Ga.), who is heading into the Men’s C-1 semifinal in second place. Irving thinks that Fraker is ready for the competition after being able to study the course during today’s Kayak finals.
