2010 Junior Olympics Festival
The 2010 JO Festival is currently scheduled for July 10-18, 2010 to be held at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in western North Carolina. Line up your schedules to drop in and have some fun. This event will take place all at the same location so once you are there, you can enjoy more daily whitewater fun without a lot of travel when compared with the 2009 events.
Because the events take place in the "in-season" rafting, the US Forest Service does not allow gates to be placed in the main drop area where the February and March slaloms are held. However, the gates starting at the raft takeout next to the River Restaurant will be continuously available and proceed through the freestyle wave and under the lower walk bridge. It is ideal for cadets and cub cadets. The freestyle wave has been intensified for playboat action. Also the downriver from any place upstream through the main Nantahala Falls will be available.
Plans are being made to include new events besides the traditional ones so that it should be a wave-swaying, Eskimotiert fun time. The events don't exactly conflict with the World Junior Slalom Championships to be held in Foix, France on the weekend of July 9-11. A quick return to the US will enable our best junior paddlers to also take in most of the 2010 JOs.
Now is the time to register slalom, wildwater/downriver, and freestyle events to be Junior Olympics Qualifiers and to encourage beginning paddlers of all junior ages to start paddling, training, and racing to be eligible for the 2010 Festival and to have fun by doing well.
Here are the age classes for 2010; they are based on birth years:
Cub Cadets will be 1998 and later
Cadets will be 1996-1997
Junior-16 will be 1994-1995 and
Juniors will be 1992-1993
