IMPORTANT UPDATE for Senior Sprint Athletes

Gerald Babao April 20, 2009

As of today’s date we do not have funding to support our participation in any of this year’s international competitions. If this remains the case through the time we conduct our team trials, we will proceed to plan our World Cup trip on the basis of 100% athlete self-funding. Prepayment of the estimated cost of the trip will be required with acceptance of any earned team position consistent with our approved selection procedure.

The Athlete Agreement that will be executed with the National Team members this year is now available on our website, HERE. Please review this and address any questions to the Executive Director since the High Performance Director position is presently vacant. The agreement is essentially the same as in prior year’s with some editing to clarify points that have been asked about in the past.

There is a small amount of Direct Athlete Support available from USOC for our sprint program this year. The amount is expected to be less than $20,000. The allocation of this Direct Athlete Support will be determined by USOC in consultation with USA Canoe/Kayak following the completion of the World Cup tour which will end on June 7, 2009 in Szeged, Hungary. Determinations will be based on Olympic event results in the World Cups and assessments of individual athletes’ potential for success in this year’s Sprint World Championships and potential to medal at subsequent World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games. The distribution of this Direct Athlete Support determined after the World Cup tour and will commence following return of the team in mid-June.
