San Diego’s Johnson Paddles to Three of Five U.S. Golds in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Carrie Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) captured three of five gold medals for the United States in flatwater sprint racing at the 2007 USA Canoe/Kayak Knockout Sprints, Saturday, Oct. 13 and Sunday, Oct. 14 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  Johnson’s gold medals in the women’s K-1 4,000-meter, K-1 500-meter, and K-1 200-meter events were among ten medals won by the U.S. team athletes at the two-day regatta on the Oklahoma River.

Other top performances by U.S. paddlers came from two-time Olympian Rami Zur (Chula Vista, Calif.), who captured gold in the men’s K-1 200-meter and silver in the men’s K-1 500-meter events.  Robert Finlayson (Gainseville, Ga.) also brought home gold, winning the men’s C-1 event and Jordan Malloch (Seattle, Wash.), who competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, won silver in the men’s C-1 4,000-meter and bronze in the men’s C-1 200-meter.  

In the closest race of the regatta, Johnson, a 2004 Olympian who won gold in the women’s K-1 1,000-meter event at this summer’s second World Cup in Szeged, Hungary,  edged Canada’s Emilie Fournel by just 0.07 seconds in the women’s single kayak 4,000 meter event to bring home gold.  Johnson’s winning time was 18:45.796.  Fournel finished in 18:46.607 for the silver, while Maggie Hogan (San Diego, Calif.) captured the bronze in 19:10.378.  Kristin Gauthier of Canada was fourth and Jen Burke (San Diego, Calif.) was fifth.  

In the women’s K-1 500 meter event, Johnson brought home gold in 1:54.241 edging Fournel by 3.12 seconds.  Frounel paddled to a 1:57.361 for the silver while Canada’s Kristin Gauthier finished third in 1:59.611 for the bronze.  Hogan was fourth followed by Burke and Emily Vinson (Gainesville, Ga.).  

In the women’s K-1 200 meter, Johnson again defeated Fournel by the slimmest of margins, capturing gold by just .85 seconds to win the event in 42.927 seconds.  Fournel won silver in 43.775 seconds followed by U.S. paddler Kari-Jean Mckenzie (Richmond, B.C.), who clocked a 45.017 for third.  Canada’s Guathier was fourth, Hogan fifth and Emily Mickle was sixth.  

Other U.S. gold medal performances came by Zur in the men’s K-1 200-meter event.  Zur defeated Canada’s Mark Dejong by .47 seconds for the 37.596-second win.  Djonge crossed the finish line in 38.064 for silver in the event.  Canada’s Richard Dobber Jr. was third in 38.366 seconds.  Canada’s Angus Mortimer was fifth, while Taran Stucchio (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) finished sixth.  

In the men’s C-1 500 meter event, Finlayson brought home gold for the U.S. clocking a 1:56.195 for the win.  Claudiu Ciur of Canada was second in 2:00.448.  Alejandro Schwedhelm of the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club (Gainesville, Ga.) finished third in 2:09.993.  Lanier’s Sam D’entremont was fourth in 2:15.342, followed by Jordan Malloch (Seattle, Wash.) in 2:18:438.  

In the men’s K-1 1,000-meter, Canada’s Angus Mortimer, Richard Dobber Jr. and Mark Dejonge swept the top three spots.  Jeff Smoke (Buchanan, Mich.), was fourth, followed by Zur and Patrick Dolan (Kailua, HI).  

Thirty-four athletes from the U.S., Canada and Senegal competed in the two-day knockout regatta on the Oklahoma River.

About Sprint Canoe/Kayak
In flatwater sprint canoe/kayak, paddlers race in buoyed lanes in single, double and four-person boats, competing for time over a set distance.  In kayak competition, closed boats are paddled from a sitting position with a double-blade paddle.  In canoe competition, open boats are paddled from a kneeling position with a single-blade paddle.  In Olympic competition, men race in the 500-meter and 1000-meter K1 and K2, 1000-meter K4 (denoting one, two or four paddlers in a kayak) and 500-meter and 1000-meter C1 and C2 (canoe). Women race in the 500-meter K1, K2, and K4 events.  Flatwater racing was first introduced to the Olympic Games program as a demonstration sport in 1924 and gained full-medal status in 1936.
