Day 3 from 2009 Junior Sprint Worlds, Morning Report

by Mac Hickox / August 02, 2009

DAY 3 — Sunday August 2 — MORNING REPORT
500M SEMI FINALS

7:00 — Team USA meets in the hotel lobby to head over to breakfast before the last day of racing.
WEATHER REPORT — pouring rain – first time we have seen rain since Lake Placid
8:00 — Team meets again to head to the course and the boathouse – rain has subsided
MOOD — Relaxed, confident, ready and upbeat – laughter everywhere – WK4 – giddy with excitement – finally we get to show our stuff!!
8:20 — C2 – Ian Ross and Ben Hefner head to Boat Control for weight check – ALL IS GOOD
WK2 – Chelsea Smith and Katy Hill - do the same – ALL IS GOOD
NOTE: at this level athletes need to be self reliant – they need to take some of the responsibility for their equipment, nutrition, clothing, rest and race plan. Coaches have to develop this more at the club level.
Forgetting to bring gear for their boats, athlete ID (accreditation), back number, racing shirt, meal tickets, flip flops for walk across the median is simply unacceptable – some have parents that do everything for them and they are struggling to keep up with simple things on their own. It is a distraction for everyone else.
NOTE: the boathouse area is for athletes, coaches, team leaders and officials ONLY – it is good to see the security here checking for credentials – yet every once and awhile somebody slips through to take photos or trade for pins.
NOTE: the “porta potties” are a mess – attention to details on the part of the Org Com has been a little off the mark – remember the “Devil is in the Details” – our athletes are making the necessary adjustments.
9:45 — C2 – goes to the water for final warm up – this is a very competitive field – Lane #2 USA; Lane 3 Iran; L4 Germany L5 Italy L6 Spain L7 Brazil L8 Slovakia and L9 Moldova
WK4 — heads to the water for pre race paddle – finally they are getting their moment on the stage
10:05 — MC2 – SF #1 USA 7th of 8 – 1:57.484 Advance to the B Final – they have done a personal best and are ecstatic and rightfully so – every time out they get stronger – some steering issues and some wash affected an otherwise great performance.
6th Moldova – 1:54.327 and 1st is Spain in 1:50.124
NOTE: top 3 to A Final 4 – 7 to B final plus next fastest time.
SF #2 — 1st Kazachstan – 1:47.749 3rd Czech Republic – 1:48.687 6th Canada – 1:55.812 * lane beside KAZ
7th Japan 1:59.334 8th Singapore – 2:00.489
MK2 – SF # 2 - Luke Potts and Cedric Bond – Lane # 1 – strong side wind hits lane 1 hardest – finish 8th of 9 with a 1:41.654 – They are eliminated - Temperature 18 C overcast and moderate to strong cross wind.
Canada – 6th – 1:40.503 / 1st Germany 1:35.746 (US Time standard) 3rd Great Britain – 1:37.783 – go to A Final
NOTE: GB only brought 3 athletes total – all of their athletes have come from ID program – regularly use 2000m time controls and a time standard – October, November, April, May, June as a gauge – do not meet the standard – not nominated to any team. Australia – all athletes must be fully self funded – no dollars for Junior Program.
MK2 SF#3 – 1st Spain 1:35.860; 3rd – Portugal 1:37.081; 6th Sweden – 1:38.287
Team USA is ranked 23 out of 27

NOTE: Sprint Selection Committee regularly relates our athletes’ performance relevant to athletes from Canada – the Lake Placid International Regatta has been tailored to attract strong teams from Canada – July 2 and 3, 2010
SF #2 – 1st Italy 1:51.200; 3rd China 1:52.894; 5th Kazachstan 1:56.663 6th Japan 1:57.832
